About

Chi é Bernini? Who is Bernini and why am I searching for him? I am a New Yorker, and for years I’ve been fascinated with all things Italian. Of course I like the food, the vino, the history…but several years ago my cara amica (good friend) Linda Martinez suggested I visit the Galleria Borghese in Rome and I fell in love.

Among the paintings and artifacts in the Galleria, the collection of Cardinal Scipione Borghese, who was mad about art, are many sculptures by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, my 400-year-old boyfriend.

Bernini was a prodigy who became the favorite of popes, and it’s been said that “he was made for Rome and Rome was made for him.” In truth, the artist created much of the Eternal City we know today—from the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi in the Piazza Navona, to the colonnade at St. Peter’s Cathedral, to the statue of the Elephant and Obelisk that stands outside Santa Maria sopra Minerva cathedral. His sculptures in the Borghese Gallery are astoundingly lifelike works of drama, intrigue and romance. (Check out his David, said to be a self-portrait, and you’ll see why I have a crush.)

Last year I left my magazine editing job, and now I’m taking some time to search—for Bernini, yes, but my search has also grown to include history, knowledge, culture, new experiences, good coffee. In other words, life in Italy.

Thanks for visiting!

    Hi Lisa,
Was I ever surprised to read a delightful article about Italian language schools in the “Dream of Italy” newsletter and to find a photo of my colleagues at ItaliaIdea. I hope all is well and that your “dream of Italy” is materializing. I’ve added your blog to my favorites list. I’d love to learn about your new adventures.
